In the country, 85% of teenagers aged 12 to 14 play video games, according to the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo. The same source also indicates that Brazil is at the top of the international rankings for time spent on consoles.

But can this seemingly harmless pastime become a mental disorder? To answer this question and raise awareness among students and teachers about this topic, Integra Coopera, Coopera’s Collaborative Community Space, has launched an online living project.

The project, led by psychologists associated with the community space pioneering electrification cooperative Coopera, visits public schools that partner with the institution.

“In psychological assistance to young people at Integra, we have identified an increase in problems associated with excessive use of social networks and gambling addiction. There the idea was born to discuss this topic with them in more detail,” explains Samara Barbosa, a psychologist at Integra.

In September and October, discussions are held with 9th grade public school students Luis Tramontin, Aloysius Baca, Angelo Ise and Natalio Vassoler from Forquiligna. “We had initial conversations where students could ask anything they wanted to know about using screens and games. Now we are returning to answer the questions they raised,” explained Josie Jacques, Cooperative Sector Coordinator at Coopera.

Topics covered include risk factors for disordered screen use in a family context, digital drug use, awareness of the types of violence that exist in this environment, and tips and strategies to help your teen connect with others. screen.” This topic is a challenge for parents and teachers. When a hobby becomes an addiction

According to the World Health Organization, gaming addiction is considered a mental disorder. Psychologist Samara Barbosa lists some warning signs for parents and caregivers:

• Prolonged play that interferes with other activities, such as eating, reading, personal hygiene, or studying;
• Violation of social relationships, the young man avoids leaving home and being with family or friends;
• Reducing sleep time;
• Decline in academic or professional performance;
• Increased family conflicts;
• Irritation when away from a game or mobile phone.

The psychologist adds that the presence of five or more such signs over the course of twelve months is a reason for warning. “Relying on the support of a mental health professional and participation in support groups is the best way to restore the quality of life and health of the young person and his family,” concludes Samara.
