Ilka Boin, liver transplant coordinator at Unicamp (State University of Campinas), explained the fate of Faustao’s heart, which was discarded after the transplant of the 73-year-old presenter, as well as the fate of other old organs after the replacement operation.
Information taken from Portal R7. According to the specialist, after the removal of the affected organ, it is sent for analysis of pathological anatomy.
“All removed organs are mandatory and legally sent for post-mortem examination to confirm the underlying disease. It happens immediately,” Boin explains.
The fate of the removed organ is the same as that of a patient who, for example, has a piece of an organ affected by cancer removed, explains Luiz Fernando Ferras.
“When referred for anatomical and pathological analysis, the pathologist analyzes the organ from the outside, checking for possible changes, whether the weight and size are adequate or affected by any disease, and then [o órgão] it is opened to see possible changes and internal damage. From here, small fragments of about 1 cm each are collected, which will be examined under a microscope.”
Organs are stored in special containers with formaldehyde, as well as test samples, for the period necessary to conclude a conclusion about what could have affected them. Ferraz reports that this process usually takes about a month, but it can vary depending on the institution and the need.
After this period, as Ferraz clarifies, the samples are stored in the archive. The rest of the body parts must be discarded in accordance with the biosecurity rules set by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).
The analyzed organs are individualized with barcodes identifying the patient and sent for burning. The purpose is the same as other hospital waste or amputated limbs.
Restoration of Faustan
After a heart transplant on Sunday (27), presenter Fausto Silva, known as Faustan, was extubated on Tuesday morning (29) and is breathing without the aid of equipment. The information is taken from a medical bulletin issued by the Albert Einstein Hospital, where the presenter is hospitalized.
The hospital also reported that the presenter is conscious, speaks normally and has good heart function. Despite this, he was still hospitalized in the intensive care unit. He joined the transplant queue after worsening heart failure.
