Samuel, who was only four months old, died in his mother’s arms in Florianopolis last Sunday (27). In an interview with reporter Karina Koppe from NDTV, Mother Camila de Brito Guedes told the details of what happened.
Due to a misdiagnosis after passing through the Florianópolis Hospital and being referred to the Joan de Gusmão Children’s Hospital, the child who was diagnosed with gas died in his mother’s arms. According to the death report, the cause was bilateral pneumonia.
Samuel started having flu symptoms on Monday (21st), and on Wednesday (23rd), the day his parents took him to HF (Florianopolis Hospital) for treatment, the situation worsened.
“We arrived at the hospital and it was very crowded. I waited about 3 hours to be served. My consultation lasted about 3 minutes, the doctor listened to the lungs and prescribed a nasal wash,” he says.
Deterioration and return to Florianopolis hospital.
However, from Wednesday’s consultation to Saturday (26), Samuel got worse, and his mother took him back to the Florianopolis hospital.
“On Saturday, he was quickly treated, the doctor examined him and another doctor. They asked to do an x-ray, a blood test, they said that there would be gas. If it got worse, he should have been taken to Infantil,” he says.
At home, after treatment, the child became worse again. The mother then returned to the hospital, but this time to the Joan de Gusmão Children’s Hospital, where HF referred her.
“The doctor was looking but not breathing,” he says.
On the same day, the baby was sent home.
“On Sunday, he had a purple mouth, his stomach sank. Then we ran to the Florianopolis hospital, but already in the car I saw that he was there, in my arms, not breathing,” he says.
The child’s father, Gustavo Valdema Correa, reports that it is difficult for him to muster up the courage to continue life after the death of his son.
“It was complicated. I wanted to go to sleep and forget about everything. But we must restore justice,” he says in a voice choking with tears.
