‘Disappointment never happens’: Patient rings ‘victory bell’ as he completes subcutaneous history of chemotherapy

A patient from Blumenau experienced moments of joy and comfort when she completed one of the steps against breast cancer. Joyce Lucian Tiedt da Silva, 45, rang the long-awaited “winning bell” at the Santa Catarina Hospital (HSC), where she received and completed chemotherapy.

To celebrate, the hospital decided to organize a surprise for the patient, who was touched, to say goodbye to the staff. To complete the cycle, she received messages and memories from everyone who accompanied her on her journey.

According to HSC, ringing the bell is an initiative that emerged in 2019 and continues to motivate patients at all stages of treatment.

Joyce was surprised by the diagnosis

In an interview with Portal ND+Joyce said she discovered the disease in February of this year during routine checkups.

“When you get the news, it’s a very difficult moment, people have such a culture to hear the word “cancer” and immediately the thought of a death sentence comes to mind.”

A day after receiving the mammography result, I consulted with a mastologist and began a series of tests, and it turned out that it was necessary to remove the left breast. The patient underwent surgery in May.

“A month later I started chemotherapy. I have one more operation and radiation therapy, and then complete the full treatment, ”he said.

Going through a mastectomy was one of the most difficult moments Joyce faced, as she knew she had a tumor that needed to be removed, but waiting to determine the type of treatment that needed to be done made her very upset.

About going through this difficult process, she says that she maintains faith in God and in her prayers.

“The support of the family, the people who love you, helps you cope. Health professionals can guide you, answer questions and, of course, point out the best treatment,” he added.

Giving up is never an option

Married and the mother of a 20-year-old girl, Joyce said she has always led a healthy lifestyle, never suffered from serious illnesses. The cancer diagnosis took her by surprise as she had no symptoms to indicate it.

“When such news comes, you are forced to stop, everything remains in the background, and the priority is health, and this forces you to rethink some of the settings. It makes you see that patience is really a virtue (laughs), that the time you get to spend with the people you love is the most precious thing you have, that most of the time a smile and a hug changes everything.”

Even when going through a delicate moment, she always kept her faith in the company of her loved ones.

“It really doesn’t matter who went through your life, but who stayed when you had nothing to offer and knowing that you can never despair. There are very difficult days, but always go forward!

HSC prepared a surprise for the patient

On Tuesday (15) HSC decided to celebrate Joyce’s latest chemo with a surprise. Using balloons with the word “I won” written on them, the team wrote messages to the patient and presented her with a certificate of completion of one of the stages of her battle with cancer.

As for ringing the long-awaited call, she says she didn’t think it would be so exciting.

“I had no idea what this whole party would be, there was even a gift. To all the HSC staff, especially the oncologists and Dr. Bruno, my heartfelt thanks for everything, for every smile, every word, every hug.”

Surprise was captured on video, where joyful smiles captured the faces of all who witnessed this important victory.
