There is a consensus among doctors, social anthropologists, circles of friends and women’s bubbles that there are few men who seriously seek and use available methods of contraception to avoid unwanted pregnancies – mainly condoms and vasectomy. And this culture, according to which contraception is the responsibility of women, imposes an additional burden on them, which they must share among themselves.
According to the United Nations (UN), the proportion of women of reproductive age in Brazil using some form of contraception is as high as 79%. Meanwhile, the percentage of men who do something to prevent unwanted pregnancies is just 31%, according to a 2017 survey conducted by the gynecology department of Escola Paulista de Medicina da Unifesp with pharmaceutical company Bayer.
This is the topic of the aDiversa podcast episode going live this Friday (21). This topic was discussed by Raquel Aguiar, professor and doctoral student of social anthropology at UFSC, Bruna Fani Duarte and ND+ reporter Diogo de Souza.
