This is because cooler temperatures lead to an increase in adrenaline in the bloodstream, which leads to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, in addition to more narrowing of the arteries. The warning comes from cardiologist Jamil Cherem Schneider at SOS Cádio Hospital, who highlights the increased demand for emergency care on cold days, requiring a double warning from medical teams and patients.

“First of all, it is important to follow the recommendations of doctors, avoid intense physical exertion at very low temperatures, take medication correctly, keep the body warm, avoid high-calorie foods, maintain a high level of immunity,” the doctor says. Jamil Cherem Schneider, who also adds relevant advice on physical activity and eating practices: “Sports should not be stopped, but outdoor sports at very low temperatures and very high intensity activities should be avoided. Nutrition also deserves a new look and should be balanced, not forgetting the consumption of fruits and vegetables.”

The doctor notes that the greatest concern is caused by patients with cardiovascular diseases, who cannot help but contact a cardiologist for a more detailed assessment of their health. Attention is also being given to the elderly, who already have factors that predispose to cardiac events, such as hypertension and arterial problems. However, regardless of age, people with hypertension, diabetes, or who have already had a heart attack should be especially vigilant. “The cold can still trigger angina attacks and other conditions such as thrombosis, stroke, heart failure, myocardial infarction, sudden death, and some more serious arrhythmias. Do not forget: it is always better to warn and take care of your health.”

National Institute of Cardiology steps up vigilance

The survey of the National Institute of Cardiology (INC), published in the first days of July, confirms the concern of the cardiologist at the SOS Cádio hospital. The study takes into account data from the Ministry of Health’s Datasus hospitalization system and demonstrates that several factors increase the risk of heart attack, such as lower temperatures during the winter months, especially affecting the elderly population. With important information, INC shows that last year, the number of heart attacks this season was 27.8% higher in women and 27.4% higher in Brazilian men compared to summer.
