Faced with overcrowding in intensive care beds (ICUs) in hospitals on the north coast of Santa Catarina and a public health emergency, the state government opened ten more adult intensive care beds this Wednesday (21) at Marieta Konder Bornhausen Hospital in Itajai. , of which five are already occupied.
These are the first beds out of 30 planned in the department. Ten more adult intensive care units and ten neonatal intensive care units will also be opened. This action is part of a set of strategies developed by the state government through the SES (State Department of Health) to expand service networks identified by Governor Jorginho Mello (PL).
“Respiratory diseases should increase in the coming days due to low temperatures. The opening of these beds is necessary to ensure the safety of our patients. We are working to expand even further,” says Health Minister Carmen Zanotto.
The beds were opened on an emergency basis in the building where the former Unacon worked, who got a new place in the Mother Teresa Complex. It is expected that the remaining ten beds for adults will be opened within the next 20 days. Incrementally, the unit will have a total of 45.
The expansion of intensive care units is aimed at meeting the high demand for the treatment of serious cases that occur during this period of the year, mainly due to respiratory diseases. The bed status panel indicates an overall occupancy of 91.94%. In total, another 144 beds will be available for the population.
