Concern about the rise in cases was the subject of an interview this Thursday (27th) with ophthalmologists Dr. Cleusa Coral Gan and Dr. Renan Ferreira Oliveira.

The World Health Organization (WHO) already considers myopia an epidemic of the 21st century.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, if nothing is done to stop the increase in incidence, by 2050, 50% of the world’s population will have this disease.

Nearsightedness is a vision problem that affects the ability to see distant objects clearly. This is a refractive error that occurs when the shape of the eye becomes more elongated than normal, resulting in blurring of the image on the retina.

In children, myopia progresses easily because their eyes, like other organs, grow faster than in adolescents.

According to Ollos Sadalla Amin Ghanem Renan Ferreira Oliveira, an ophthalmologist at the hospital, this increase is due to the long use of digital media and a small number of outdoor activities.

The number of cases is expected to continue to rise in the coming years, he said.
