A 20-year-old girl who was on her way to a corneal transplant in Santa Catarina got stuck in traffic on the BR-101 in Paulo López on Tuesday (20) due to heavy rains and had to be rescued by helicopter.

Born in Ararangua, the patient was referred to the San José Regional Hospital in Greater Florianopolis for surgery. A young woman has a degenerative disease that has caused her to gradually lose her sight.

The Santa Catarina native had been waiting for the procedure for more than two years, but she could have missed the opportunity if she didn’t arrive at the hospital on time. It was then that the story reached Sarasul (Serviço Aeromédico do Sul Santa Catarina) and Saera (Serviço Aeropolicial) of the civilian police who came to the rescue.

“We knew the conditions were not favorable, but we talked to the team and decided to try to get there. There were two problems: trying to get there and then managing to get to the hospital,” recalls delegate and Saer/Sarasul police pilot Rodrigo Martinez.

The trip went well. The young woman arrived two hours before the operation. “Visibility during the day was very poor. We were literally in a labyrinth among the clouds. It was a very difficult flight, but it was carried out with all the necessary safety and responsibility,” emphasizes Martinez.

A few hours later, the rescue team received the long-awaited news: the transplant worked???????? “As soon as they finished the operation, she took a picture and sent it to us with an eye patch, saying that she was fine and everything went well. It was very nice,” says the pilot.
