The boy’s brain died early Thursday (21) at the Joan de Gusmão Hospital in Florianopolis, where he was admitted from Monday (18) to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to the severity of his injuries. According to the family, the baby had a skull fracture, broken ribs and bruises under his eyes.

The civil police suspect that the crime was committed by a pair of caregivers, aged 19 and 21, who were paid to take care of the child. The two were arrested and sentenced by the court to pre-trial detention.

Deputy Fabiano Locatelli said the suspects were charged with grievous bodily harm under the provisions of the Henry Borel Law, adopted on 24 May.

A family from Venezuela came to Santa Catarina in search of better living conditions. In Casadore, the little one lived with his mother and aunt, who has a two-year-old child. The boy’s father currently lives in Roraima.

The civil police said that an expert report prepared by the coroner indicated the presence of injuries to the brain and body consistent with the practice of “shaking the baby.”

This practice is known as shaken baby syndrome, which occurs when an adult violently shakes a child, causing severe brain damage. The report also listed injuries to the face, head, back, and buttocks.

Also, according to the delegate, the investigation also established that the spouses looked after other children, but there is no information about other victims.

The funeral

The awakening of the child is scheduled for this Friday afternoon (22) at the Funerária São Pedro, in the Reunidas area, in Cásadora. The body should arrive at the scene around 4:00 pm.
