An unprecedented fact in the recent history of Santa Catarina. Due to the lack of state planning and the lack of competent management, the State Court decided to intervene in the health sector by determining urgent measures for the care of children in emergency situations.
Florianopolis Court of Children and Youth Judge Brigitte Remor de Souza May has ruled that the state will immediately grant all requests for baby and neonatal beds made to children and teens on the Santa Catarina Community Network.
The judge granted an injunction after receiving a mandamus order filed by Santa Catarina’s Department of Public Administration.
The service must be provided immediately or within a maximum of 12 hours of the medical request, including by acquiring vacancies in the private healthcare network when necessary, preferably in the same medical region where the patient is located, and ensuring that with proper transportation.
The state government will also have to provide a list of requests for vacant places in pediatric and neonatal wards and intensive care units every day.
The State Department condemns the increase in the occupancy of newborn beds in intensive care units from the end of 2021 without the implementation of preventive measures by the State Department of Health.
Really incredible. In Santa Catarina, Brazil’s model state, the government ministry and the judiciary must act to ensure the survival of children.
Much worse: in a vacuum of inactivity, children will be cared for in makeshift containers.
