Twins Mabel and Miguel, who were born in Chapeco, west of Santa Catarina, after a battle over newborn beds, are now with their parents. The brothers were born on June 21 at Unimed Hospital.
Luciana Cardoso and Moasir Agustini, who live in Linha Marcon, in the city, are now perfectly happy. “It is a joy and a relief that they are both at home with us after all the suffering and worry we have gone through,” the father said.
According to Moasir, Miguel was born healthy and was discharged with his mother on June 23. Already Mabel had to undergo surgery due to a suspected cyst in her intestines. The operation took place on June 24, so the girl had to stay in the neonatal intensive care unit until this Monday (6), when she returned home.
The hospital had an empty bed for the newborn, where she remained hospitalized until last Sunday (3). Miguel didn’t need to stay in the neonatal intensive care unit.
“It was a risky operation because she was young. A biopsy showed that she had a malignant tumor. Thank God it has been removed completely, but further tests will be done to see if there is any risk of it spreading. We believe that everything will be fine.”

Luciana’s birth was scheduled for June 19, but it was delayed due to a lack of newborn beds in the Intensive Care Unit (HRO) (Regional Hospital do Oeste). After uncertainty, the mother was transferred to Unimed Hospital and the twins were born on the 21st.
Before getting a bed, the parents were worried about the uncertainty of the day and place of the birth, as there was a possibility that Luciana would be transferred to another city, which did not happen due to the transfer to Unimed Chapecó.
