Lately I’ve been very nauseous, and waking up is the worst part: in the morning I ask myself: “What bed am I in?” which sounds very live but it’s just a job. When I open my eyes, it takes me some time to understand what city I am in, whether I am in a hotel or at home. Today I’m in Sottomarine, Chioggia, filming i hate christmas 2I was in Rome the other day Blanca. Before I fall asleep, I grab landmarks like curtains or the TV so I don’t panic when I wake up.
Have you been waiting for an offer from a perfume brand?
In fact, yes, because I only choose to collaborate with brands that I like, and perfumery is one of my biggest passions. I am a dandy, and fragrance remains a fundamental element of style, a very important calling card.
Do you always choose fragrances with a nostalgic touch?
It’s easy to think that it was better in previous ages – I know – because only the beautiful comes down to us. But I like to stay in touch with the past and a scent like James this is one way to do it. When I choose, I don’t think about what essences it contains, I try it, and if the image comes to me, if it tells me a story, then this perfume is doing its job well.
What flavors do you like in others?
I am amazed by the creative power of fragrance, the magic has to happen, like in a good movie or a good song. And behind this there is always a culture of doing good: you inhale the aroma and something familiar, generally recognized, an archetype comes to mind … Dublin people, grandmother’s house, childhood. Perfume is an accessory that makes you feel good. I don’t want to sound flippant, but for me, for example, an Atkinsons travel bottle of perfume is a great item that I always carry with me because it has a modern scent, but is deeply rooted in the past, like the things I love.
Have you studied the history of James Atkinson?
It always fascinates me that there are hours behind this, spent on the creation of an object. We need beautiful things and I think it’s useless to play low: we are in a period where there is a need for self-definition, I want to think and feel that I am special in something, and spirits thrive when they evoke a story, craftsmanship and tradition.
There is also a certain need for elegance these days…
And I drown in it. After years of being homemade and casual, there is an opposite reaction. I myself could not wait to recreate this wonderful morning ritual: choosing a jacket, matching shirt and tie. The ritual is not only aesthetic, but also a necessary form of self-love. Vintage cars and motorcycles, vinyls, cameras. They are a milestone for understanding who I am and who I will become.
What scents do you like to hide in?
I have a notebook where I write down what I like, including smells: they help me define myself. The scents of the month are the wood from the fireplaces that I smell when I walk around Bracciano and the scent of cut grass: it takes me back to when I played football with friends as a teenager, poignantly. The sensations caused by smell are proof that physical memory is much stronger than brain memory.
