Mario Kart with Akira’s bike? Illustrator Presents Crazy Japanese Pop Culture Crossover
No time for games
Super Mario Bros. The film was listed as one of the highest grossing animated films in history, an unprecedented feat for a Japanese co-production. The secret of success lies in the faithfulness and respect to the original games, as well as in a relaxed and fun tone that contrasts sharply with the most popular anime films such as Akira. To celebrate the arrival of a newcomer to digital platforms in style, the artist imagined a meeting between these very different Japanese works.
The illustration is part of the project cool cartoons, created by French illustrator Tohad, in which he reimagines children’s cartoons, changing the happy atmosphere for something darker and more realistic. So the thematically merging Akira and Super Mario ends up fitting perfectly into his usual offering, especially now that Nintendo’s gaming franchise has spawned a movie. Check the result:
For this art, Tohad redesigned a classic anime poster using elements from Mario Kart. The protagonist’s famous motorcycle has been slightly adapted for Mario’s use in his death races through the Mushroom Kingdom, with the right to a Koopa Troopa hull reinforcing his rearguard.
The plumber’s outfit also embodies the anime’s urban style, but without compromising the essence of the character. The jacket with the Super Mushroom logo became the overalls of the Italian hero. And in his hand he has a green hoof to terrify anyone who passes in front of him.
