After the book and movie follows Series. The process itself is not shocking: by now, the stories that are sent from paper to the small and / or big screen are wasted. However, in this case, the task is quite difficult: the adaptation in question, the blog Netflixnothing but de Leopard. The streaming platform will shoot the series: six episodes, which have just begun filming. Understand well that in this case “doing well” is not enough: one must do better – or at least correspond to it – than the novel that has entered the history of our literature, and the film that has forcibly entered the collective imagination (how can one forget those very young Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon?). Consequently, interest in the project is already very high.
Here’s what we know so far.
The series is a co-production with the participation of the Italian company Indiana Production AND Photos of the moon. As the book says, the action will take place in Italy: the first take was filmed in Rome, then we will be transported to Sicily, more precisely to Palermo, Syracuse and Catania.
The story must be faithful to the famous work of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. Therefore, it will not be a sequel, not a prequel and not a spin-off, but a reinterpretation of the famous classic, reimagined in its supporting structure. Thus, the action of the series takes place in Sicily in 1860 and tells about the life of the aristocrat Don Fabrizio Corber: a rich and wealthy man, the Prince of Salina. However, like all the rest of the nobility, ours fear that the unification of Italy could threaten the well-being and stability of his family. Therefore, he begins to weave a series of plots that will lead him to make a difficult decision: whether or not to arrange a marriage between the wealthy Angelica and her nephew Tancredi. If it passes, his house is safe. On the other hand, however, it would break the heart of his beloved daughter, Concetta.
However, there is a but. As far as we know, the Netflix version will be more modern. Translation: Give way to women. In particular, unlike the film, the character of Concetta, that is, the daughter of Don Fabrizio, will become more central. Ours, in love with her cousin Tancredi, will fight against the patriarchal system, effectively sharing the stage with Don Fabrizio.
As for the cast, at least on paper it has all the rules to keep up with its famous predecessors. If she played Angelica in the film Claudia CardinaleTancred from Alain Delon and Don Fabrizio from Burt Lancasterin the series we will find in the respective roles Devas Kassel (yes, that’s right: Vincent and Monica’s daughter), Saul Nanni AND Kim Rossi Stewart both are returning following the success of the film Brado. Let’s move on to the director’s chapter. There will be many people behind the camera. The six episodes will actually be split among three directors: Tom Shankland will film episodes 1-2-3-6, they will be joined by Joseph Capotondifor episode 4, and from Laura Luchetti, for episode 5. “The book and film have been foundational for most of my life. But above all, Sicily was important: I have been there many times thanks to my father,” said Shankland some time ago. “We want to take a modern look at this story from the past. Like all classics, The Leopard adapts to each new generation and we have the opportunity to make a series suitable for both Italian and international audiences because the themes are universal. Tomasi di Lampedusa’s voice, on the other hand, is modern, ironic, sensual and psychological: we can create a new leopard for our times.”
Last but not least, the head of costumes. From what it turns out, the series will be a triumph for the eyes. Representing images and outfits is Charles PoggioliThe costume designer has consistently awarded David di Donatello for his work. The whole project, however, has monstrous numbers: the budget is high – even if the exact figure is not disclosed – the crew consists of 250 people and there were 32 weeks of preparation that precede the clapperboard. From the series: they want to do big things. And they will succeed.
