Soon a king and queen consort would be crowned, but for many years it was just Charles, the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles. or “Fred and Gladys” if we want to use the code names that two lovers have given each other over years and years of secret phone calls and meetings.. It seems that Carlo and Camilla have been calling each other by these nicknames since the beginning of their relationship in 1970, but it’s still not clear what the meaning behind it is.
The secret nicknames of Charles and Camilla became public thanks to Andrew Morton’s 1992 biography of Princess Diana. This was first mentioned in the book. the episode with the bracelet discovered by Diana before the weddingalso taken from the third season Crown. Despite the strong objections of the prince’s right hand, Morton says, the young Lady Spencer asked to open a package that arrived at the palace a few days before their wedding, and found an engraved bracelet intended for Camilla. In fact, the initials “G” and “F” were on the bracelet, and Diana knew the nicknames of the two lovers because she had heard them used by mutual friends. It seems that Diana naturally changed her mind about the wedding as soon as she discovered the gift, but she was told it was too late to back out. “Diana told me in one of our private conversations that she felt like a lamb being slaughtered as she walked down the aisle at the wedding,” royal expert Jenny Bond said.
The names “Fred” and “Gladys” seem to come from two minor characters. Thug Show, a British radio program broadcast between 1951 and 1960, of which Charles and Camilla were fans. The choice of the nickname is probably due to an inside joke between two secret lovers, and we will never know the whole truth. Perhaps Fred and Gladys had their day today and are now part of a past that is not always easy to justify and is certainly more confusing than the present. The king and queen prefer something less flashy in public, like “darling” or “mehboobah”, which means “my sweetheart” in Urdu.
