In the royal family, nicknames never go out of style and have always been a way to express affection beyond the label. Prince Philip has always called his wife Lilibet by the nickname her father Harry gave her, even when he talks about the plague and his brother’s horns, he always calls him Willie, and of course there are the nicknames of Charles and Camilla when they were lovers. Fred and Gladys, those of the little Cambridges, Pop for George and Lottie for Charlotte and the one with whom George called the Queen: Gary instead of Grandmother. However, the cutest of all remains the one that Lady Diana gave her son William: a wombat.
William spoke about the nickname in a recently released 2007 interview. “I was in Australia with my parents, e the wombat is a local animal, that’s why they called me that basically”. “Not because I look like a wombat. Or maybe yes!” the prince joked, “I can’t get rid of him now. It all started when I was two years old.” Wombats are Australian marsupials that look like small cubs with short legs and a friendly muzzle. They inhabit mainly the forests and mountains of southeast Australia and Tasmania. They are rather slow (except when they feel that they were attacked) and friendly, and for this reason, they have been very well liked on social networks lately.
1983 was the year of Charles and Diana’s royal tour of Australia. William was just over a year old, and it’s nice to think that his mother affectionately compared him to a wombat. Today, the nickname probably has a bittersweet taste for a prince. “I think when you grieve at a young age, at any time, but especially at a young age, you feel pain that is incomparable to any other pain,” the Prince of Wales said in an interview, “And you know that your life will be very it’s hard to find worse pain.”
