Oscar: Why does the award have such a name?
Despite the fact that this is the “nickname” of the award, “Oscar” has already become much more popular than its real name!
At the beginning of the year, the small world of cinephiles says nothing but awards season, which will end in March with the 95th issue exhibition. Academy Awards, an awards ceremony for the biggest stars and films of the year. However, many people know the award not by its official name, but by its nickname – Oscar. But how did it happen?
First ceremony Oscar was held in 1929, awarding films in the previous two years. Its official name Academy Awardsrefers to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciencesbody responsible for organizing, voting and the ceremony itself, which has been operating since 1927 (through Hola!).
However, in the early years of its existence, the Oscar was known only as Academy Awards. When the awards were presented to artists and leaders in the audiovisual market, they were called Academy Award of Merit – or, roughly translated, Academy Achievement Award. But everything changed in 1939.
Nearly a decade after the formation of the first ceremony, Margaret Herrick – the executive director of the Academy – said that the statuette handed over to the artists is very similar to his uncle oscar. Since then, the award has been referred to as the Oscar, and the ceremony has been referred to as such in Brazil. In the United States, it is very common to see quotes from Oscar – yes, in the plural.
According to the history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, when the organization was formed in 1927, committee members decided that the award should be “majestic trophy“. In this case, Cedric Gibbons who was the art director MGM – made an original model with a male silhouette holding a sword and mounted on a pedestal made of filmstrips.
Since then, the award has undergone some minor changes. All figures are forged at the Polich Tallix Fine Arts Foundry located in New York. The trophies are 34.29 centimeters high and weigh about 3.85 kilograms. They are made of solid bronze and covered with a layer of 24 carat gold.
OUR Oscar 2023 will take place on the day March 12.
