The “Kate effect” works again. Back from Boston, where the Princess of Wales has garnered rivers of acclaim for her all-green look, complete with a rented dress and Lady Diana’s emerald choker, Kate Middleton again surprised his guests by offering a tiara that has become a classic in history royal family jewels: tiara lotus flower. This is the crown that William’s wife has not worn since 2015 on the occasion of the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and which she again showed off at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening, seven years later, during the traditional reception intended for the diplomatic body.
Dressed in red to remind us that Christmas is coming and that after two years apart we will all be together again as a family, though for the first time without the late Queen Elizabeth, Kate brightened up the evening with her precious tiara, compiled from the theory of the lotus flowers that originally made up the necklace. Created by Garrard in 1923, the gemstone was a wedding gift from the future King George to his wife, Elizabeth, who fashioned it into a tiara just six months later. The royal jeweler himself took care to disassemble his own creation, again offering it in a new version, which was then worn many times by the mother of the future queen.
The gem was then given to her daughter Margaret in 1959, shortly before her marriage to Anthony Armstrong-Jones, and became one of the Queen’s sister’s favorite tiaras along with Poltimore. With the death of the princess, the tiara returned to the collection of the queen, who first lent it to Kate in 2013 at a diplomatic reception at the palace. Since then, she’s only worn it in 2015 for the aforementioned Chinese president’s state visit, before re-proposing it this week, paired with a pair of diamond-studded earrings and a Jenny Packham red lace long dress. True vision.
