The Umbrella Academy: Creator Reveals a Comic Book Scene That Would Be Too Expensive to Do in a TV Series
The creator of the Netflix series revealed the scene he really wanted to do, but couldn’t because of the budget!
After a long wait, the third season is out. Umbrella Academy finally available on Netflix and like the previous chapters, Year 3 was also inspired by the comic book saga of the same name created by Gerard Way as well as Gabriel Ba. In an interview with Tudum, executive producer Steve Blackman commented on the difficulties of adapting events from the comic to audiovisual, showing what scene would be the most expensive to be done in the series.
During an interview, Blackman was asked if there were moments from the comics. Umbrella Academy what he wanted to bring to the Netflix series, but it wasn’t possible. According to the creator of the production, he would gladly do “many things”but financial problems became serious obstacles.
The producer illustrated his response by mentioning a story from Eiffel Towerwhere Hargreaves fight zombie robot. He said:
“There is a wonderful story about the Eiffel Tower that we wanted to make on the front pages. [dos quadrinhos]where children fight Gustave Eiffel and everything comes to life as if it were a robot. We put these things into the budget. I sat down with the special effects team and asked, “How much is it going to cost?” and I was blown away.”
A story about the Eiffel Tower could have made it into a Netflix series, but it would have been too expensive to produce.
Blackman also gave another example of how the budget can limit the creative development of a production. According to the producer, the production team wanted to shoot a few more scenes in Dallas (USA) in the second season, but from a financial point of view, it would not be profitable.
It’s nothing new in the industry that an adaptation, be it a book or a comic, is always accompanied by a number of restrictions which are often needed due to differences between languages. FROM Umbrella Academy it’s no different, but at least fans can be sure it’s not for lack of trying.
