Station reconstruction works Madrid Chamartin-Clara Campoamor will result in the suspension of Cercanías traffic through the Sol Tunnel between the aforementioned station and the bus stop. New ministries. The suspension of service will affect lines C3, C3a, C4, C4a and C4b and will last from February 4 until the end of the year.

To minimize the impact of the interference, Renfe changed the schedule – together with Adif and in coordination with Madrid Regional Transport Consortium-, their services on affected lines who see their routes limited and change schedules and frequencies.

In the north-south direction, traffic ends at Chamartin, where passengers can continue their journey on trains bound for Atocha via the Recoletos Tunnel: lines C1, C2, C7, C8 and C10. Conversely, from south to north, the start and end service stations will be Atocha or Nuevos Ministerios. At both terminals, passengers will be able to continue their journey on the remaining Cercanías flights that operate through the Recoletos Tunnel: lines C1, C2, C7, C8 and C10.

“The work is the longest in the entire 34-year history of commuter services in Madrid,” said sources from the Renfe commuter service in the region. “I wanted the mobility of travelers to be affected as little as possible,” they continue.

Cercanías Madrid, which currently has 1,246 daily trains with 605,324 seats, will increase its circulation offer by 15% to reach 1,436 daily trains in the center of Madrid and will have 642,173 seats (37,000 more), which is 6% more than today. .

The reason for cutting the tunnel is that the operation would require the use of large machinery. In addition, these are single works with foundations very close to the tracks and the construction of large beams on the platforms and tracks.

The work is also financed from European recovery funds, so the railroad administrator cannot afford to extend the deadlines. During this 2023, Adif will be performing extension of Chamartin’s main lobby to the north, providing more space for Cercanías. This service will have a separate area for travelers making urban and intercity trips.

To do this, the vestibule above the tracks will expand, displacing stairwells and elevators, and a new canopy will be built above the platforms. From this new waiting and information area, Cercanías passengers will access the platforms via a new 1,300m walkway.2.

On the other hand, he will also install track and signal devices between tracks 1 and 6. to improve the operation of the railway service – increasing flexibility and improving the response of facilities in the event of incidents – and conditioning platforms 1, 2 and 3. Similarly, the work will be completed with reinforcement of structures in the area of the city square to absorb the new costs generated by road improvements.

With an investment of 326 million euros, the work aims to double the capacity of the high-speed rail and double the concourse area in the north, east and south. The reconstruction of 13 tracks and platforms for Cercanías is also under consideration and restores the old Cercanías lobby under the north end tracks, and with it the core of the vertical connection between the platforms and the interior hall, as well as a direct connection to the high-speed and Madrid Metro.

The transformation of Chamartin will make a decisive contribution to the development of Cercanías: once completed, the station will be able to handle 25-30% more passengers, up to 900 trains per day. These activities are completed before the comprehensive renovation that will be carried out on the station and its urban environment with a design proposal selected in an international competition. The planned investment in the transformation of Madrid-Chamartin Clara Campoamor will exceed 1,000 million euros.
