The figures are clearly positive and one might even say that they are above average. According to the General Register of the Employed and Unemployed of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, 16,400 jobs have already been created in civil engineering in Santa Catarina from January to August 2022.

The hiring rate in the segment is higher than the same period in 2021. Last year, up to August, 15,000 jobs were created. Another 1,400 jobs have been created this year.

With the increase in the number of jobs and workers, the demand for providing services to construction companies and developers in the state also increases. So much so that the market that is growing together is equipment rental.

A scaffolding and prop company based in Joinville, North Catharinense is producing 800 tons of new equipment through December 2022 alone to avoid material shortages.

“We have foreseen investments planned for 2023 due to the intensification of civil engineering in Santa Catarina. In the first half of the year, we have already produced 400 tons of equipment, and by December we will produce another 400 tons,” explained Adriano Greca, COO of Versátil.

The expectation, according to the director, is to satisfy the demand. The company also invested in a second painting line change. As a result, the company has doubled its maintenance capacity and made scaffold and metal stud inspection processes more flexible to increase equipment turnover and ensure builders have materials when they need them for the job.

According to IBGE, in the first half of 2022, the gross domestic product (GDP) of civil engineering in Brazil grew by 9.5% in the first half of 2022 compared to the first half of 2021.

The challenge is to hire, in other words, skilled labor. According to a survey by the Commission on Labor Policy, the areas with the greatest shortage of specialists are masons (82%) and carpenters (78.7%), as well as construction management – foremen (74.7%) and superintendents (70%).
