Started in 2005, Better Cotton is now the largest sustainable cotton program in the world, and a new member from Santa Catarina North has now joined. The Malwee group from Jaragua do Sul joined the program.

The program is part of an initiative by a non-governmental organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has been disseminated around the world as a best practice. From production, to farming practices in a more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable way.

Adhesion is also part of the strategy of the Santa Catarina company, which has set ambitious goals in its ESG 2030 plan, launched during COP 26 in Glasgow, such as achieving 100% production using raw materials and processes with less environmental impact.

In 2021, the company achieved 92% production against these criteria, in addition to being a pioneer in Brazil in using sustainable raw materials in production, such as shredded cotton and recycled polyester (commonly known as PET mesh).

Cotton production today accounts for about 35 million hectares of cultivated land (2.5% of the world’s arable land) and employs 300 million people annually in the sector. Data from the International Cotton Advisory Committee – ICAC.
