The average price of a liter of gasoline at the country’s gas stations in July reached the level of 6.50 reais. This represents a 14% drop from June, according to a poll conducted by Ticket Log on IPTL (Periodic Price Survey). The report contains information from Portal R7 and Agência Estadão.
Ethanol was sold at a price of R$5.50, which represents a price decrease of 8.34% compared to the same period of the previous month.
According to the portals, price drops were registered in all five regions of Brazil. The largest drop was recorded in the southeast, where the price fell by 18.01%, and the average price was 6.18 reais. In the Southern region, a liter of fuel was the cheapest: R$6.09, down 15.3%. Despite a decline of 11.94%, the most expensive gasoline is in the northeast, where the average price is R$6.79.
Piauí is the state where a liter of fuel is sold at the highest price in the country – 7.23 reais. In the federal district, not only the cheapest gasoline, sold at 5.95 reais, but also the most pronounced decrease – 23%. None of the states recorded an increase in fuel prices.
According to the survey, cheaper gasoline is associated with lower ICMS by the states. At the end of June, President Jair Bolsonaro authorized a law setting a 17% to 18% cap on the tax rate levied on fuel, natural gas, electricity, communications and public transport.
Ethanol also recorded a decrease in the average price compared to the previous month, and at the end of July it was cheaper in all regions. In addition to the lowest average among other regions (4.72 reais), the Midwest experienced the most pronounced decline in the cost of a liter (-13.02%). The highest price for ethanol was recorded in the north – 5.89 reais, despite a fall of 6%.
São Paulo leads the ranking of the cheapest ethanol in the country, selling for R$4.21, down 9.91%. The most significant reduction in the price of this fuel was registered at filling stations in Rio de Janeiro (15.60%) – from 6.16 reais to 5.20 reais. The most expensive ethanol was found in Para at a price of 6.35 reais.
IPTL is a fuel price index based on deliveries made at 21,000 Ticket Log accredited service stations serving 1 million vehicles, averaging eight transactions per second.
