According to a survey released Tuesday (7th), four out of 10 Brazilian workers surveyed do not know the value of their FGTS (Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço) balance sheet.

A survey conducted by Serasa and Banco Pan showed that, despite the fact that 92% of the 2132 employees registered under the CLT (Consolidation of Labor Law) regime, 33% still do not know under what conditions they can use their own money .

According to Agência Brasil, the least known options among those surveyed are “take a loan” (64%) and “remove the balance after 70 years” (58%).

In addition to the fact that 38% do not know the balance, 16% admit that they do not know that it is possible to check the balance with Caixa Econômica Federal. Among those surveyed, 40% have balances up to BRL 1,000, while 51% have up to BRL 2,500.

Among those surveyed who would like to use FGTS to fulfill their dreams, 45% are thinking of using the balance to buy real estate, 33% plan to use the funds to start their own business, 17% to pay off all debts and another 10% said they intend to use the buyout to clear the name. Low interest rates are the main attraction for getting a loan guaranteed by FGTS.

In terms of investment, 43% say FGTS is terrible as there are better ROI products out there, and 39% say FGTS is a safe haven for the future. About 33% intend to leave only in case of emergency.

“The study is important for understanding the relationship between Brazilians and FGTS. It is clear that there is a significant proportion of people who do not know how to use this feature. It’s important to clear things up for the consumer so they can make a decision because it’s their money and it can be used to make their financial life easier, said Felipe Sharpers, who is in charge of the Opinion Box Institute, the company responsible for the research.

“Young workers do not have complete information about FGTS, so it is important to be careful when providing financial education to those entering the labor market,” Sharpers added.
