The entity has been warning the population and the mayor’s office of Balneario Camboriu about the situation for several weeks now. The NGO provides assistance to rescued, abandoned or vulnerable animals.
A large number of animals makes it difficult for staff and volunteers to care for them. The site currently has one trainer for every 100 animals.

Due to overcrowding, fights between animals also became more frequent, resulting in the death of three animals.
“The vast majority of these yard fight deaths are related to moving due to lack of space. This is the reality,” says volunteer Patricia Debrassi.
While the fireworks, as well as the noises from the quarry next to the NGO site, frighten the animals and may harm their coexistence, she clarifies that this will not cause the animals to die, as the mayor’s office said. .
In addition to the animals that unfortunately died after the fighting, others are still recovering with several injuries.

Patricia says that after social media posts revealed the situation, the community has collaborated a lot to improve the conditions of the space.
The nurseries were donated materials for cleaning and restructuring. However, she explains that there is often not enough manpower to renovate and restructure nurseries.
In addition to donating materials, the NGO also needs volunteers for this work, improving the structure that welcomes animals.
Another key to overcrowding is the responsible acceptance of the community. Many animals, because they are older, larger, or have a disability, end up not being adopted and are in the care of NGOs.
Adoption, as well as community awareness in acquiring and caring for new animals, is essential to avoid periods of overcrowding like the one we have now.
What the city says
Secretary of the Environment of Balneario Camboriu Maria Eloisa Furtado Lenzi explains that the municipality, through the Abraço Animal program, returns more than 1.2 million reais per year to the non-governmental organization Viva Bicho, in addition to the amounts returned for environmental services such as various works on improvement, carried out in recent years in the shelter.
This amount goes to the maintenance of the shelter, staff salaries, sterilization, veterinary care and the purchase of feed.
The mayor’s office also says it is fully committed to saving vulnerable animals, as well as conducting environmental education activities in schools and the community for responsible management.
“NGO Viva Bicho and government agencies cannot accept all abandoned animals due to the irresponsibility of people, including other cities that are taking advantage of the actions developed here to abandon animals in Balneario Camboriu,” the note from the city says. Hall.
The municipality also states that public awareness is needed about not abandoning animals, not neutering, keeping animals with identification and adoption collars.
Regarding the current overcrowding situation in the shelter, the note states that “Unfortunately, this is the result of the negligence of people who do not sterilize their animals and abandon them for useless reasons, and the consequences are those animals that end up in shelters, often not are adopted and spend their whole lives in an NGO.”
The mayor’s office claims that the death was due to burning fireworks, which disturb the dogs, causing fights and escapes.
