Due to a shortage of doctors, the pediatric emergency department of HU-UFSC (Professor Polidoro Hernani de San Tiago University Hospital) will close service in the institution’s pediatric emergency department from this Saturday (15). The event will start at 7am and run until 7am on October 24th.
According to the hospital’s own statement, the measure was motivated by a shortage of pediatricians to “provide safe and proper care despite staff recovery efforts.”
For the same reason, from November 1, the opening hours of the institution will be reduced. On this day, pediatric emergency services will be present from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm while the emergency lasts.
During the treatment suspension period, pediatric emergencies should be referred to emergency departments and other pediatric units in the municipality.
“The unit continues to function normally, providing care for hospitalized patients and patients referred by the Santa Catarina Health Network,” the unit said in a statement.

The hospital usually has two pediatricians to assist in the emergency department and the inpatient department. To ensure service, the facility has deployed overtime servers and rescheduled outpatient operations for emergencies. However, these measures are not enough to meet the demand, as there is a shortage of eight doctors on the scale. New specialists with public examinations have already been named, but no new selection is foreseen in connection with the electoral legislation.
According to the hospital, the suspension of care finds legal support in the current regulations (LSU Decree No. under his leadership, when expected functional conditions are not present.
