Bathers have found one of the world’s largest tortoise species, known as the giant tortoise, at Praia da Corvina, in Salinopolis, northeast of Par. Registration took place at the beginning of June.
Biologists say that the appearance of an animal in the area is not common, and in such cases, the network of marine research and protection can be called in for evaluation. Some species can weigh from 500 to 900 kg.
The animal, also called the leatherback turtle, attracted attention with its black shell, covered with tough leathery skin, and measuring about two meters in length and 1.5 m in width.
This species of tortoise usually lives in the open sea, approaching the coast, usually to breed their young. They feed on gelatinous organisms such as jellyfish and jellyfish. “Perhaps it got lost or deviated from its natural path due to breeding or climatic reasons,” explains Palmyra biologist Gonçalves Ferreira.
