Infertility is a global health problem affecting over 48 million couples and 186 million people across the planet, or 15% of the world’s population, according to WHO, the World Health Organization.
In Brazil, the numbers are also attracting attention. According to the SBRA, the Brazilian Society for Assisted Reproduction, about 8 million people in the country may be infertile.
Low fertility is a problem faced by many families who are expecting their first child, for example. On the other hand, medicine is advancing through procedures that allow reproduction. Responsible physician and technical director of the Gaia Center for Assisted Reproduction, Dr. Juan Carlos Pou, explains that egg freezing is becoming a trend increasingly chosen by couples, this procedure increases the chance of pregnancy and reduces the chance of fetal malformations.

“Patients who want to become pregnant can freeze their eggs, as the characteristics of the age at which the collection was made are preserved, as the egg supply decreases over time,” he explains.

Doubt may arise in couples who have been looking for their first pregnancy for more than six months. UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs study warns of low global fertility rate. The poll shows a decline since the 1990s from 3.2 births per woman to just 2.5.

By 2050, this number is projected to drop to 2.2 births per woman. Even if there is no doubt, consultation with a specialist can be a safer and healthier path to pregnancy. Many couples wonder if age is related to infertility. Juan Carlos Pou, need to know: “Women under 35 who have sex two to three times a week for up to 1 year and who have not had their first pregnancy need counseling,” he says. Women over 35 years of age, but maintaining constant sexual intercourse for less than 6 months without fertilization, also need to be screened.

The Gaia Center for Assisted Reproduction, located in Crisium, notes that approximately 20% of couples of reproductive age have difficulty getting pregnant, about 40% of cases are men, and the remaining 40% are women. This is why investment in the reproductive-oriented medicine sector is the foundation of a Center that puts the well-being of patients at the forefront, whose structure aims to realize the dream of couples having a child.
