Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege this Sunday (19th) on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict expressed his regret at the lack of “political will” to eradicate this type of violence.
“Rape and sexual violence are used in all modern conflicts around the world, as they are today in Ukraine,” the Congolese gynecologist wrote in a statement.
In 2018, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his actions in defense of women victims of rape used as weapons of war.
“We are sad to see that there is often a lack of political will, a lack of financial resources,” adds the doctor.
“The culture of impunity that benefits the perpetrators and instigators of these heinous acts is the norm rather than the exception,” he lamented.
“We again ask the community of nations (…) to mobilize human and financial resources to address the consequences of sexual violence committed and to redouble their efforts to prevent the recurrence of these crimes,” Mukwege urged.
